You can't rise higher if you're not rooted in earth. Here's how to ground.
The more you open to higher consciousness, the more you need to anchor in earth. That's how these states of consciousness are embodied, integrated, and open the way to more expansion. But this aspect is too often ignored, in the quest for peak experiences.
One misconception is that spirituality is going “up,” that it resides in opening the crown chakra, or “raising” your vibration; in other words, that it's about transcending the material.
There is a genuine reason for that. In the common spiritual paradigm, everything earthly, the body's needs, desires, attachments, the pull of the everyday, is viewed as a hindrance. And so the dichotomy becomes built into the path.
However, being human is existing in a continuum of awareness. And accessing “higher” states of consciousness doesn't need to occur in rejection or denial of bodily existence, or of other states of consciousness, even the more mundane. Actually, it's in embracing the whole spectrum of the human experience that you can fully integrate them, allowing them to permeate all your experiences.
It is about the alchemy of the soul that breathes into the body.
So let's bring this down to earth, literally.
WHAT GROUNDING ACTUALLY IS
Grounding is bringing your consciousness down from the clouds into your body, into the present, into physical reality.
Spiritual work without grounding is a skyscraper without a foundation.
Grounding allows you to feel safe and at home in the physical body and in the world. It is the bedrock upon which to build higher levels of consciousness. Many spiritual people have weak roots because they've been taught the material world doesn't matter or is secondary.
You need both.
Higher consciousness AND functioning in daily life.
Spirit AND paying bills.

WHAT SPIRITUAL PRACTICES CAN MAKE YOU UNGROUNDED
Practices that tend to unground you: excessive meditation without somatic counterparts, channeling without closing the field, energy work focused only on upper chakras, psychedelics without setting time and practices for integration, prolonged fasting, any practice that makes you feel “above” or “detached from” earthly concerns.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU'RE UNGROUNDED
Feeling “untethered” or not quite here
Difficulty focusing or completing tasks
Anxiety or racing thoughts
Disconnected from your body
Struggling with practical tasks
Feeling “too sensitive” to the world
Feeling separated from the flow of the world
Three or more? You need more grounding.
THE BALANCE: ROOTS AND WINGS
You CAN do all of these spiritual practices. But you need to balance them with deliberate grounding.
The most powerful practitioners are like redwood trees: deep roots into earth, branches reaching toward heaven.
Reach only up, you topple. Dig only down, you can't grow.
Also, grounding doesn't limit your spiritual experience. It stabilizes it so you can go higher safely.

HOW TO ACTUALLY GROUND
1.
Bare Feet on the Ground
(5–15 min)
While research is still ongoing regarding the benefits of earthing, it is undeniable that bringing awareness to your bare feet on the grass, sand, dirt, or even concrete brings a sense of release, relaxation, and connection to a wider expanse.
2.
The Stomp Practice
(1 min)
Stomp your feet hard while walking around. Feel the impact. Feel the energy moving in your body.
3.
Weighted Movement
(5–30 min)
Walking, hiking, weightlifting, standing yoga, gardening. Anything that makes you feel your body's weight and elicits true presence. Think, “conscious movement, not dissociating on a treadmill.”
4.
Hold Something Heavy
(1 min)
A rock, a book, a water bottle. Feel gravity and let it guide you to your own sense of being deeply held. Weight reminds your body it belongs to earth.
5.
Root Chakra Breath
(2 min)
Breathe into your belly and imagine the breath going down through your pelvis, legs, feet, into the earth. Visualize roots growing from the base of your spine and your feet. Energy follows attention.
6.
The 5 Senses Check
(1 min)
For a quick grounding practice: name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This pulls you out of your head into the here and now.
7.
Leverage Your Food
ongoing
Eat root vegetables: carrots, parsnips, potatoes, turnips, beets, anything grown underground. Favour subtle flavours over strong ones and stimulants; the more neutral the taste, the closer you stay to a calm, mindful awareness. Choose slow-cooked foods with sufficient protein. While salads and juices are extremely beneficial, consumed alone they will keep you ungrounded.
WHEN TO GROUND
Before practice (foundation).
After practice (integration).
Whenever you notice spaciness or anxiety.
How much: 5–10 minutes daily minimum. 15–30 after intense energy work.
You can't over-ground.
IN CONCLUSION
Spiritual grounding is in fact a return to the roots of who you are, in relation to the earth that carries you, to the kindred living beings around you, and to the invisible dimensions of your being... all at the same time.
Start Here, Right Now:
Take off your shoes
Stand on the ground
Feel your feet
Stomp a few times
Breathe into your belly
Say: “I am here. I am grounded. I am safe in my body. I am kin to all. I am soul in action.”
Remember: Ground first. Then fly.
